Nigerians checking their voter registration details have been urged to scrutinise the records after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) launched a review of photographs suspected to have been generated using artificial intelligence.

The investigation follows public concerns raised on social media about questionable images in the register, with the Commission assuring citizens that verified irregularities will be addressed before the final document is certified.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, INEC clarified that the version published on its website on 26 October was the same document physically displayed at Registration Areas nationwide from 9 to 15 October during the Display, Claims and Objections exercise.

The Commission explained that the online publication did not reflect all ongoing data-cleanup activities because it contained the original records.

It added that some questionable entries had been identified and flagged for further examination during the physical display, prompting a review and corrective action in line with established procedures.

INEC is also investigating the circumstances surrounding the suspicious photographs, including possible technical or procedural lapses.

However, it did not disclose the number of affected records or confirm how the images entered the system.

The Commission stressed that the document remains subject to public scrutiny and correction.

The Display, Claims and Objections exercise allows citizens to identify inaccuracies and irregularities and seek appropriate changes before the final Register of Voters is certified.

INEC, through the Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, commended citizens and stakeholders who raised the alarm, noting that public vigilance helps improve the accuracy and integrity of voter records.

The Commission said verification, adjudication and data-cleanup processes would continue ahead of the scheduled certification of the final Register of Voters on 15 December 2026.

It assured Nigerians that confirmed irregularities would be addressed through established procedures, with further updates to follow as the investigation progresses.
