IGP Disu Highlights Police Reforms, Community Protection At US-Nigeria Security Talks
The Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed its focus on professional policing and community protection as Nigeria and the United States reviewed progress on their security cooperation roadmap.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, made the submission at the second United States-Nigeria Country of Particular Concern Joint Working Group meeting held in Washington, D.C., on 12 August 2026.
Disu, who represented the NPF as part of a high-level Nigerian delegation, highlighted counter-kidnapping and anti-banditry operations, increased police presence in vulnerable communities and early-warning measures aimed at protecting civilians and supporting the safe return of internally displaced persons.
He said specialised police formations had been deployed to vulnerable Local Government Areas during the April-June reporting period to strengthen public safety and deter violent extremist and criminal groups.
The IGP also disclosed that the recruitment of 50,000 police constables was approaching the final pre-training stage, with preparations for training based on an improved curriculum and international best practices.
He stressed the importance of stronger engagement with traditional and religious leaders, saying public trust, religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence remained central to sustainable security.
Disu further reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to lawful investigations, human rights, due process and civilian protection, as part of Nigeria’s wider counter-terrorism and criminal justice efforts.
