EU Did Not Reject Nigeria’s 2027 Election Invitation – It Will Send Expert Mission
A rumour about the European Union pulling back from Nigeria’s 2027 elections has been firmly rejected, and the paper trail tells a different story.
The EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS says reports claiming it declined an invitation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to observe the 2027 general election are inaccurate.
According to the Delegation, INEC formally invited the EU on 17 April 2026. In its response of 28 July, the EU confirmed that it would deploy an Electoral Expert Mission (EEM) made up of two to four independent experts, who will be accredited by INEC as observers.
The unusual twist is that the two reasons reportedly given for rejecting the invitation, Nigeria’s worsening security situation and alleged hostility towards EU observers after the 2023 election, do not appear in the EU’s letter at all.
The Delegation described those claims as “pure speculations”, explaining that the EU decides annually which electoral missions to send, and what type of mission is appropriate, based on the situation in each country and available resources.
The EU also stressed that its decision to conduct the expert mission will not affect its ongoing support for Nigeria’s electoral process through the EU-funded Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria project.
EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, urged journalists to verify reports concerning the EU directly with its press and communication office before publication.
