Oil Without Development: Ogbaru Leaders Demand Faster Action on Host Community Commission
Oil-producing communities should not remain without basic infrastructure while contributing to Anambra State’s economic growth, leaders in Ogbaru have said, urging the government to fast-track the establishment of the Host Community Commission.
Chairman of the Ogbaru Oil and Gas Sub-Committee, Chief Anthony Okwesa, made the call during a courtesy visit to the Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Prof. Charles Ofoegbu.
Okwesa lamented that communities contributing to the state’s oil industry still struggle with poor roads and inadequate access to potable water and healthcare.
He urged the government to implement the 2024 law establishing the Host Community Commission, saying it would provide a sustainable framework for resolving disputes and strengthening relations among the government, oil companies and host communities.
Responding, Ofoegbu assured the delegation that Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration was committed to improving living conditions in oil-producing areas.
He disclosed plans for critical infrastructure, including a primary healthcare centre, schools and access roads, as part of efforts to promote sustainable development in affected communities.
Representatives of Ogwu Ani-Ocha community welcomed the proposed projects and pledged their support for government efforts to combat illegal bunkering and promote peace in the area.
