Glasgow 2026: Odobeatu Dangles $2,000 Bonus To Inspire Nigerian Swimmers

Private-sector support for Nigerian athletes has received a boost ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, as sports enthusiast Joseph Odobeatu Anayo announced cash rewards for swimmers who reach the podium in Glasgow.

Odobeatu, the South-East Representative on the Board of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAqF), pledged $2,000 for every gold medal won by a Nigerian swimmer, $1,000 for silver and $500 for bronze.

The businessman and philanthropist said the incentive was designed to motivate athletes and complement government efforts as Nigeria prepares for the Games, scheduled for 23 July to 2 August 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“Our swimmers deserve every encouragement as they prepare to represent Nigeria at the Commonwealth Games. Excellence deserves to be rewarded,” he said.

Odobeatu stressed that private-sector involvement was crucial to developing Nigerian sports, noting that financial rewards and recognition could inspire athletes to perform at their best on the international stage.

He recently rewarded Nigerian medal-winning swimmers Collins Ebingha and India Brown following their performances at the 17th African Swimming Championships in Oran, Algeria.

Odobeatu reaffirmed his commitment to supporting athlete development, improved sports facilities and stronger partnerships between government, sports bodies and the private sector.
