As chemical incidents increasingly threaten public health and the environment, the Federal Government has pledged to strengthen Nigeria’s chemical safety, emergency preparedness and surveillance systems.
The commitment was reaffirmed at the Second Quarter 2026 meeting of the National Committee on Chemical Surveillance and Emergency Systems (NCCSES) in Abuja, where stakeholders reviewed the implementation strategy for the National Guidelines on Chemical Event Surveillance.
Director of Food and Drugs Services at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Mrs Olufowobi-Yusuf Adeola, said the government had made significant progress through stronger inter-agency collaboration, laboratory capacity assessments, the development of national surveillance guidelines and efforts to establish Poison Information Centres.
Supported by the UK Health Security Agency, the meeting also focused on improving the reporting of chemical incidents, enhancing emergency coordination and advancing the One Health approach to protect Nigerians from chemical hazards.
