Soludo Moves To End Ogidi Flooding As Government Targets Blocked Waterways

Years of recurring floods that have displaced residents and damaged property in parts of Anambra State may soon be nearing an end, as the state government intensifies efforts to tackle the root causes of the crisis.

A high-powered delegation led by Commissioner for Works, Architect Okey Ezeobi, conducted an on-the-spot assessment of flood-prone communities in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area, and Trans Nkisi in Onitsha North, following recent heavy rainfall that worsened flooding in the affected areas.

The team, comprising key officials from the Ministries of Physical Planning and Environment, as well as the Office of Special Projects and Idemili North Local Government, identified human activities as the major cause of the persistent flooding.

These include the construction of buildings on natural waterways and the blockage of drainage channels with waste and illegal structures.

Speaking after the inspection, Ezeobi reaffirmed Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s commitment to finding a lasting solution, stressing that the government would reclaim blocked waterways and remove structures obstructing the free flow of water.

He said the findings would guide immediate remedial measures and long-term infrastructure improvements aimed at protecting lives, property and economic activities in the affected communities.

The officials also urged residents to comply with town planning regulations and avoid dumping refuse in drainage systems, emphasising that public cooperation remains critical to preventing future flooding incidents.
