Behind every peacekeeping mission are men and women who leave their families behind to protect vulnerable communities and prevent conflict from escalating.
On the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, the Nigeria Police Force has honoured their courage and sacrifice while reaffirming its commitment to global peace operations.
In a message marking the 2026 commemoration, Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, paid tribute to peacekeepers who lost their lives while serving under the United Nations flag, describing their sacrifice as an enduring inspiration in the pursuit of a safer and more peaceful world.
The IGP highlighted Nigeria’s longstanding contribution to international peace missions, noting that Nigerian police officers have served with distinction in several United Nations, African Union and regional operations, earning respect for their professionalism and dedication in conflict-affected communities.
Speaking on this year’s theme, “Invest in Peace,” Disu stressed the need for stronger investment in peacebuilding, training, technology and international cooperation to tackle emerging threats such as terrorism, organised crime, cybercrime and violent extremism.
He also acknowledged the contributions of female peacekeepers and called for increased opportunities for women to take on leadership roles in peace operations.
Reaffirming the Force’s commitment to global peace and security, the IGP said the Nigeria Police Force would continue to strengthen its peacekeeping capacity and support initiatives that promote stability and sustainable peace across the world.
