Investing in science education remains one of the surest ways to prepare young Nigerians for future opportunities in technology, innovation and industry.

That commitment was on display as the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) concluded the 9th edition of its Science Quiz Competition for secondary schools in Bayelsa State.

Kaiama Grammar School, Kaiama, and Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Imiringi, emerged joint winners of the competition, while Apex Academy, Yenagoa, secured the second runner-up position.

The winning schools received top-of-the-range laboratory equipment, including microscopes, anatomical skeleton models, electronic compact scales and standard printers.

The six student contestants were also rewarded with HP laptops for personal use.

Speaking at the event held at the Nigerian Content Tower Conference Centre in Yenagoa, the Executive Secretary of NCDMB, Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe, represented by the General Manager, Corporate Communications, Dr. Obinna Ezeobi, described the competition as a key educational initiative that has been sustained for nine consecutive years.

He noted that the partnership between NCDMB and the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) has endured because both organisations share a commitment to education and capacity development.

According to him, the competition is designed to stimulate students’ interest in science and technology, which are critical to the growth of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry and other sectors of the economy.

The NCDMB boss also highlighted the Board’s investment in Information and Communication Technology centres across secondary schools, equipped with laptops, smartboards and stable power facilities, to enhance digital learning.

NTA Yenagoa General Manager, Mrs Mary Ekanem, commended NCDMB for sustaining the competition and supporting the broadcaster’s educational mandate, noting that the initiative encourages students to study harder and broaden their knowledge.

The competition coordinator, Mr David Oyintare Enemiebor, praised NCDMB for expanding participation from 16 to 32 schools and for improving the quality of prizes awarded to participants.

The event concluded with the presentation of prizes to the winning schools and students.
