AFN Intensifies Nationwide Offensive, Rescues 221 Civilians, Arrests 314 Suspects In May

Nigeria’s military says sustained pressure on terror groups and criminal networks across the country is yielding major gains, as coordinated operations in May led to the rescue of 221 abducted civilians, the arrest of 314 suspects, and the neutralisation of 317 terrorists and criminals.

At a Defence Headquarters briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, the Armed Forces of Nigeria said troops recorded significant successes across the North East, North West, North Central, South South and South East theatres, targeting insurgents, kidnappers, oil thieves, gunrunners and separatist elements.

Among the major breakthroughs according to the Director Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, was the rescue of 92 kidnapped commuters along the Buratai, Kamuya Road in Borno State after troops intercepted terrorists during a mass abduction attempt.

He said security forces also dismantled illegal arms manufacturing sites in Plateau State and intercepted sophisticated oil theft operations in Rivers and Delta States.

The military further disclosed that 18 terrorists surrendered during the period, while 93 arms were recovered and three illegal refining sites destroyed.

In the North East alone, Operation Hadin Kai recorded the neutralisation of 73 insurgents, the arrest of 159 suspects and the rescue of 112 civilians.

Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, commended troops for their professionalism and sacrifice, while assuring Nigerians that operations would continue with renewed intensity until all criminal elements are brought to justice.
