Police Condemns Viral Threat Video, Launches Disciplinary Action Against Officer
In a move seen as part of growing efforts to rebuild public confidence in law enforcement, the Nigeria Police Force has condemned the conduct of a police officer captured in a viral video allegedly threatening members of the public for filming police activities.
The officer, identified as ASP Newton Isokpehi, was seen in the widely circulated video making remarks considered intimidating towards citizens recording police operations.
Reacting to the incident, the Force described the officer’s behaviour as unacceptable, unprofessional and inconsistent with the ethics and standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has repeatedly affirmed that Nigerians have the lawful right to record police officers carrying out their duties, provided such actions do not obstruct operations or compromise safety.
The statement noted that the officer has been identified and summoned to the Anambra State Police Command Headquarters, where disciplinary procedures have already commenced.
The Force stressed that threats, intimidation and abuse of office would not be tolerated, especially at a time when the police institution is pursuing reforms aimed at strengthening transparency, accountability and citizen-focused policing.
The police further reassured the public that recording police activities remains a legitimate tool for accountability and should not attract harassment from officers on duty.
Authorities also promised that the outcome of the disciplinary action against the officer would be made public in due course.
