U.S. Moves To Expand Trusted Mobile Network Infrastructure Across West Africa

Millions of people in rural West Africa still struggle with poor or non-existent internet access, a gap that continues to slow economic growth and digital inclusion across the region.

In a fresh push to bridge that divide, the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) has unveiled plans to support the deployment of American-made wireless infrastructure across four West African countries.

USTDA announced funding for a feasibility study aimed at installing about 1,500 turnkey mobile communications base stations in Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Nigeria through Massachusetts-based technology company, Vanu Inc.

According to the agency, the initiative is designed to expand affordable and secure internet access to off-grid communities in a region where Chinese-made wireless systems currently dominate.

USTDA Deputy Director, Thomas R. Hardy, said the project would provide an alternative to “insecure infrastructure” while creating opportunities for American companies in critical markets.

The study, to be carried out by Vanu Côte d’Ivoire with support from Georgia-based Vernonburg Group LLC, will assess market conditions, regulatory frameworks, existing network infrastructure and financing models needed for large-scale deployment.

Chief Executive Officer of Vanu Inc., Andrew Beard, described the partnership as a major step toward delivering broadband and voice services in economically challenging areas across West Africa.

He noted that the project would help accelerate investment and the rollout of secure digital infrastructure in underserved communities.

The initiative is also expected to improve connectivity in communities currently limited to outdated 2G and 3G services, opening up opportunities for business growth, communication and digital participation across the region.
