Nigeria Becomes Africa’s Road Safety Hub As FRSC Hosts Continental Secretariat
As Africa battles rising road traffic deaths and mobility challenges, Nigeria has positioned itself at the centre of the continent’s road safety coordination efforts with the inauguration of the African Association of Road Safety Lead Agencies (AARSLA) and West African Road Safety Organisation (WARSO) Secretariat in Abuja.
The landmark event, hosted by the Federal Road Safety Corps at its national headquarters, drew diplomats, African Union representatives, development partners and delegates from across the continent, reinforcing Nigeria’s growing influence in transport safety and regional integration.
Speaking at the ceremony, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed described the new Secretariat as “a bold affirmation of Africa’s collective resolve to safeguard lives, strengthen institutions, and advance sustainable mobility across the continent.”
The Secretariat was inaugurated on behalf of the Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission, Hon. Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, by Plateau State Commissioner, Hon. Pam Bot-Mang, who hailed the initiative as a major step toward harmonised transport governance and safer roads across Africa.
Top continental stakeholders at the event included AARSLA President Nashow Kondiwa, representatives of the World Bank-supported SSATP programme, and delegates from Liberia, Benin Republic, Côte d’Ivoire and Sierra Leone.
The new Abuja-based Secretariat is expected to drive continental collaboration in research, policy harmonisation, training, innovation and data management, while supporting the goals of the African Union Agenda 2063 and global road safety targets.
