CAPPA Demands Urgent Reforms Amid Nigeria’s Cost-of-Living Crisis
As rising rents, transport fares and food prices continue to squeeze Nigerian workers, Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa, CAPPA, has warned that May Day celebrations mean little without urgent economic reforms that improve people’s lives.
In a statement signed by CAPPA’s Media & Communications Officer, Robert Egbe, marking International Workers’ Day 2026, CAPPA said millions of workers are battling worsening hardship despite wage reviews, with many now unable to afford decent housing or basic services.
The group described reports of lecturers and public workers sleeping in offices due to high rents as a disturbing reflection of Nigeria’s growing housing crisis, especially in cities like Abuja and Lagos.
CAPPA also criticised government land allocations to political appointees, arguing that public assets should prioritise ordinary Nigerians struggling to survive the economic downturn.
Its Executive Director, Akinbode Oluwafemi, called for affordable housing schemes, stronger labour protections, improved public services and welfare-driven policies to shield workers from deepening hardship.
The organisation urged labour unions, civil society groups and policymakers to use May Day as a rallying point for accountability and people-centred governance.
