Nigeria’s football community is once again reminded of the quiet architects behind its golden moments, as it mourns the passing of one of its most influential administrators.

The Chairman of the Federal Character Commission, Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Nigeria Football Association president, Ibrahim Galadima, who passed away in Kano on April 18, 2026, at the age of 78.

Omidiran, who served on the NFA Board during Galadima’s tenure from 2002 to 2006, described his death as a profound loss to Nigerian football and the wider sporting community.

She recalled a period marked by strong leadership, discipline, and significant global recognition for Nigeria’s football.

According to her, Nigeria rose to become the ninth-ranked football nation in the world during their time in office, an achievement she attributed to Galadima’s vision, integrity, and commitment to excellence.

“He was a man of immense wisdom and discipline whose leadership shaped the direction of football administration in Nigeria,” she said, noting that his legacy was built on selfless service and a deep passion for youth and sports development.

Beyond football, Galadima’s influence spanned several key roles, including Chairman of the Kano State Football Association, Executive Chairman of the Kano State Sports Council, First Vice President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, and Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Kano State.

Omidiran extended condolences to his family, the government and people of Kano State, and the entire Nigerian football fraternity, praying for strength for those he left behind.

With his passing, Nigeria loses not just a sports administrator, but a pivotal figure whose contributions helped shape the modern identity of its football.
