Soludo Urged To Show Mercy As Civil Servants Face One-Year Suspension in Anambra
In a public service system long plagued by absenteeism, the line between discipline and compassion is once again under scrutiny in Anambra State.
The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), Anambra State branch, has appealed to Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo to temper justice with mercy following the suspension of civil servants caught absent during his recent unscheduled inspection of ministries.
While commending the governor’s decisive move to instil accountability and restore discipline in the civil service, the group described the proposed one-year suspension as excessive.
It argued that although absenteeism is a serious offence, a punitive measure should not completely undermine the livelihoods of affected workers.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Evangelist Comrade Vincent Ezekwueme, and Secretary, Comrade Chidi Mbah, the CLO urged the governor to reconsider the sanction and reduce it to two months, maintaining that such a step would still serve as a deterrent while reflecting compassion.
The organisation noted that the governor’s actions had sent a strong message about diligence and patriotism but stressed that leadership also requires empathy.
It further encouraged the administration to reward punctual and dedicated workers as a way of motivating improved performance across the service.
Reaffirming its support for ongoing reforms, the CLO expressed hope that the governor would adopt a balanced approach that promotes both accountability and humane governance.
