Eid Reflection Meets Responsibility: INEC Press Corps Urged To Uphold Integrity Ahead Of Crucial Polls
At a time when Nigeria’s electoral credibility hinges not just on institutions but on information, the role of journalists is once again under the spotlight.
Segun Ojumu, Chairman of the INEC Press Corps, has called on members to embrace renewed patriotism and professionalism as the nation prepares for a fresh round of elections, beginning with the Ekiti and Osun governorship polls.
In an Eid-el-Fitr message to colleagues, Ojumu congratulated Muslim journalists on the successful completion of Ramadan, describing the period as one that builds resilience, discipline, and spiritual strength, qualities he said are essential in the demanding task of covering Nigeria’s democratic process.
“We are not just reporters; we are active participants in the building of a more transparent and credible democracy,” he stated.
He reminded members that the coming months would be critical, with off-cycle elections fast approaching and early preparations already shaping the 2027 general elections.
According to him, the integrity of electoral outcomes is closely tied to the credibility of media reportage.
Ojumu urged journalists to remain objective, courageous, and insightful, stressing that their responsibility as the bridge between the electoral body and the public cannot be overstated.
While encouraging members to enjoy the Eid celebrations, he also emphasised the need to return with renewed purpose, ready to navigate the pressures of the election season with professionalism and a strong sense of national duty.
As Nigeria inches towards another defining electoral cycle, the message is clear: the pen, and the microphone, remain powerful tools in shaping public trust.
