Shock In Nigerian Sports As SWAN Mourns Aquatics Federation President Dunkwu
The Nigerian sporting community has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of the President of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation, Mr Chamberlain Nnamdi Dunkwu, a development that has drawn tributes from sports stakeholders across the country.
The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has expressed deep condolences to the Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAqF) over Dunkwu’s passing on Saturday, describing his death as a painful loss to Nigerian sports.
In a condolence letter dated March 7, 2026, and signed by SWAN Secretary-General, Ambassador Ikenna Okonkwo, the President of the association, Mr Isaiah Benjamin, said the news of Dunkwu’s death came as a profound shock to the sporting fraternity.
According to the letter addressed to the Executive Board of the Federation, Dunkwu’s leadership, dedication and commitment to the development of aquatic sports in Nigeria will remain unforgettable.
The SWAN President noted that within the short period he served as NAqF President, Dunkwu worked tirelessly to promote aquatic disciplines, inspiring athletes and administrators while strengthening the foundation of the sport in the country.
Benjamin added that Dunkwu’s passion, vision and service to Nigerian sports have left a legacy that will continue to guide the federation in the years ahead.
The late sports administrator died on the same day the federation had scheduled a talent discovery programme tagged “Swim To The Future.”
He had been elected President of the Nigerian Aquatics Federation only a few months ago.
SWAN also extended its prayers to the Executive Board of the federation, Dunkwu’s family and the entire sporting community, urging them to remain consoled in the face of the painful loss.
