International Women’s Day: NUJ FCT Chairman Urges Greater Investment In Women
When women are empowered with opportunity and support, the benefits extend far beyond the individual to families, institutions and the wider society.
This was the central message from the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Grace Ike, as the world marks International Women’s Day 2026.
In a statement to commemorate the day, Ike called for deliberate investment in women through education, mentorship, opportunities and access to resources, noting that the global theme for this year, “Give To Gain,” underscores the value societies derive when women are empowered.
“For me, this year’s celebration carries a deeply personal meaning,” she said, reflecting on her emergence as the first female Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council.
According to her, her leadership journey represents what becomes possible when women are given the chance to lead and excel.
She noted that empowering women creates ripple effects across institutions and communities, stressing that inclusive newsrooms, richer storytelling and responsive governance are outcomes of women’s participation in leadership and decision-making.
The NUJ FCT Chairman also praised the growing impact of female journalists across Nigeria, describing them as resilient professionals who continue to break barriers, cover challenging beats and mentor younger colleagues in the profession.
However, Ike stressed that celebrating women must go beyond recognition to concrete action.
She urged media organisations and institutions to intentionally create safe and supportive work environments, promote leadership opportunities for women and ensure that women’s voices are represented in decision-making spaces.
Referencing the United Nations call for this year’s celebration, “Rights. Justice. Action.
For All Women and Girls,” Ike said the pursuit of equality requires collective commitment from governments, organisations and communities.
She therefore called for renewed dedication to supporting women, noting that the success of women ultimately strengthens journalism, communities and national development.
“When we give to women, we truly gain as a society,” she stated.
