FG Orders Full Digital Transition By 2025 In Its Civil Service
Nigeria’s public service is gearing up for its most ambitious shake-up in decades, and for the first time, the iconic brown paper file may finally be on its way out.
The Federal Government has directed all ministries and extra-ministerial departments to abandon paper files and operate fully digitally by 31 December 2025, signalling a decisive shift toward a modern, transparent and technology-driven civil service.
Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Didi Esther Walson-Jack, announced the directive in Abuja during the second Citizens and Stakeholders Engagement meeting.
She said the digital switch is a central pillar of ongoing reforms designed to eliminate inefficiency, bottlenecks and corruption.
According to her, reducing manual handling of documents will “eliminate conduits of inefficiency, delay and corruption,” while ensuring quicker decision-making, secure records and more innovative processes.
Walson-Jack revealed that more than 92,000 federal public servants now have official email addresses, with ministry registries that have fully gone paperless set to publish their digital contact details for easier public access.
The announcement came as the government rounded off the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan 2021-2025, which has seen major milestones such as the Personnel Audit and Skills Gap Analysis.
Verification for civil servants in the diaspora holds from 15–19 December.
She also highlighted improvements in performance management, renewed emphasis on training through ASCON and PSIN, and preparations for the 2026 International Civil Service Conference scheduled for 20–21 May.
Walson-Jack praised President Bola Tinubu for his “visionary support” for the reforms and urged civil servants to embrace innovation and take ownership of the transformation.
“This is the moment for proactive problem-solving and collaboration,” she said. “Lead from your desks, uphold professionalism and finish strong.”
