SPJ-Hub Condemns Police Brutality Against Journalist In Lagos, Calls For Respect For Press Freedom

The International Press Centre (IPC), Lagos, has condemned the assault of Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) reporter, Daniel Ojukwu, by police officers at Ikeja Police Command on Friday, 29th August.

According to IPC’s Safety and Protection of Journalists (SPJ) Hub, Ojukwu was physically and mentally assaulted while attempting to obtain details of officers accused of extorting detainees. His phone was seized, his glasses smashed, and he sustained various injuries.

IPC’s Executive Director, Mr Lanre Arogundade, described the incident as “dangerous to democracy and a major threat to press freedom,” urging the police to investigate swiftly, punish the officers involved, and compensate Ojukwu.

The SPJ-Hub also called for improved training of police officers to respect journalists’ rights, stressing that the role of the press is critical, especially during emergencies.

In a related case, the hub appealed for better understanding between public officials and journalists after a verbal confrontation between the NRC Managing Director, Mr Kayode Opeifa, and veteran journalist Ms Ladi Bala during last week’s Abuja-Kaduna rail disruption.

“Emergency situations will always occur. Public officials and security agencies must cooperate with journalists, explain concerns patiently, and avoid threats,” Mr Arogundade said.
