Team Nigeria’s Golden Streak Sets The Pace At African School Games

Team Nigeria is blazing a golden trail at the ongoing African School Games in Annaba, Algeria, turning heads with a string of dominant performances that have left a mark on the continental stage.

Leading the charge is young cycling sensation, Grace Osaretin Godwin, who captured gold in the Road Race with a time of 1:37:02, fending off stiff competition from Algeria’s Chenouni and Zehnouki Yousro.

The Nigerian held her nerve and her lead right to the finish line, igniting celebrations in the Nigerian camp.

Joel Akinluwa, Secretary-General of the Nigeria Cycling Federation, was over the moon. “I’ve always believed in Grace’s potential.

She’s our beacon for future competitions, from the ANOCA Youth Games in Angola to the Youth Olympics in Senegal,” he said, joking that her victory ended the “prayer-induced hunger strike” he had been observing.

Grace’s triumph adds to Nigeria’s growing medal tally, which now includes golds from badminton and a formidable 3×3 basketball team boasting three golds and a silver.

The winning momentum has sparked what some are calling a “gold rush” mentality in the Nigerian camp, with songs, cheers, and high spirits echoing through the athletes’ quarters.

The team’s dominant sprint performances have also sparked banter from fellow African nations. “You people came for everything!” joked one delegate. “At least leave us with a medal so we can show we were here too!”

Meanwhile, Sierra Leone’s sole remaining athlete, Victorious John, has won hearts, if not yet medals.

The long-distance runner, part of a tiny delegation limited by budget constraints, has embraced the opportunity to connect. “I may not have won a race, but I’ve made friends from all over Africa and that’s a victory on its own,” he said.

John, who shares cultural and linguistic ties with Nigeria and other West African nations, added, “It’s good to see that, despite borders, we’re all connected. English brought us together, but it’s the spirit of sports that’s keeping us united.”

As the Games progress, Team Nigeria shows no signs of slowing — and the rest of the continent is watching closely.
