NCDC Heightens Ebola Surveillance After Imported Case Confirmed In Kenya
Nigeria has no confirmed case of Ebola disease, but health authorities are stepping up surveillance and preparedness following confirmation of an imported case in Kenya.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) said the case, involving the Bundibugyo virus, has been linked to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the agency said it was reviewing the risk to Nigeria and strengthening preparedness measures in collaboration with relevant authorities and partners.
The NCDC urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and observe basic preventive measures, particularly as Ebola can spread through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of an infected person.
It advised the public to wash their hands regularly with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand sanitiser, while avoiding contact with the blood or body fluids of anyone who is ill.
Nigerians were also warned against handling sick or dead wild animals and eating raw or poorly cooked bushmeat.
The agency further advised people to avoid contact with the bodies of individuals who have died from an unknown illness and to seek prompt medical attention at a recognised health facility if they develop symptoms suggestive of Ebola or have had a possible exposure.
The NCDC said it would continue to monitor developments and provide updates as necessary.
As of 6 October 2026, no confirmed case of Ebola disease has been reported in Nigeria.
