Nigeria’s drive towards a more reliable electricity supply has received a boost as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) officially transferred a temporary National Control Centre (NCC) to the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), strengthening real-time management of the national grid.
The facility, located at the Gwagwalada 330kV Transmission Substation in Abuja, houses the newly installed Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition/Energy Management System (SCADA/EMS) and telecommunications infrastructure.
It will serve as NISO’s temporary operational base until the permanent National Control Centre is completed.
Speaking during the handover, TCN Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, represented by the General Manager, Project Coordination, Engr. Amini Tahir, described the project as a major milestone in improving Nigeria’s electricity transmission system.
He said the facility would enhance grid management, system reliability and service delivery, while commending the World Bank for its support.
Receiving the facility, NISO Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Abdu Mohammed Bello, represented by General Manager, System Planning, Engr. Kabir Adamu, said the handover marks a critical step towards the full deployment of the SCADA/EMS project, pledging to manage the facility effectively to improve national grid operations.
TCN also disclosed that the temporary control centre will be returned to the company after operations are moved to the permanent National Control Centre upon its completion.
