Nigeria Breaks Ground On Sub-Saharan Africa’s Largest Off-Grid Solar Project
Nigeria has taken a major step towards accelerating its clean energy transition with the launch of what is set to become Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest off-grid solar project, designed to power heavy industry while expanding electricity access to nearby communities.
The Federal Government has launched the construction of a 200-megawatt off-grid solar mini-grid in Niger State, marking what is expected to be Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest off-grid solar project and a significant boost to Nigeria’s industrialisation drive.
The project, developed in partnership with the Niger State Government and Abuja Steel Mills Limited, a subsidiary of African Industries Group, will supply clean, reliable power to a new industrial park anchored by a modern steel plant in Minna.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, the Minister of Power, Chief Olasunkanmi Joseph Tegbe, said the initiative reflects Nigeria’s commitment to building scalable renewable energy infrastructure outside the national grid.
He noted that the project would ensure predictable energy costs for industry, reduce dependence on the national grid and provide surplus electricity to neighbouring communities.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago formally handed over the 500-hectare project site to Abuja Steel Mills, describing the investment as a major milestone in Niger State’s industrial and economic development.
The Federal Government said the project aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, signalling Nigeria’s resolve to combine clean energy with industrial growth while attracting private investment into the renewable energy sector.
