Rescue Of Ex-General’s Widow Highlights Military Gains Against Banditry In Katsina

The successful rescue of Mrs Amina Abubakar, widow of the late Major General Rabe Abubakar, has reinforced confidence in ongoing military operations aimed at tackling banditry across Nigeria’s North-West.

Mrs Abubakar was rescued by troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA after spending two days in captivity following the death of her husband at the hands of bandits in Katsina State.

Acting on credible intelligence, troops of the 8 Division Strike Force, supported by the Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, launched a coordinated search-and-rescue mission in Matazu Local Government Area. Intelligence had revealed that the victim was being held at Tunga Village in Sayaya Ward.

The operation led to a fierce gun battle, forcing the bandits to flee towards the Zobe Dam axis. In their attempt to escape, the criminals shot Mrs Abubakar in the thigh before abandoning her.

Despite her injuries, troops swiftly secured her release, provided emergency medical care and evacuated her for further treatment.

The rescue has been widely praised by residents, who described it as a sign of the military’s growing effectiveness in dismantling criminal networks and restoring security in communities long affected by bandit attacks.

The operation also reflects the strategy of the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander, Sector 2 Joint Task Force (North West), Major General Bemgha Paul Koughna, whose intelligence-led and coordinated land-air operations have intensified pressure on bandits across the region.

For many residents of Matazu and neighbouring communities, the rescue offers renewed hope that peace and stability can be restored through sustained military action.
