Easter Amid Hardship: Archbishop Martins Slams Killings, Urges Nigerians To Hold On To Faith
In a season meant to symbolise hope and renewal, many Nigerians are instead grappling with fear, hardship and grief, realities that cast a long shadow over this year’s Easter celebrations.
The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Alfred Adewale Martins, has called on Nigerians to place unwavering trust in God despite worsening insecurity and economic strain across the country.
In his 2026 Easter message, the cleric acknowledged the deepening hardship facing citizens, from rising living costs to persistent violence in both rural and urban communities.
He described the situation as a “collective groaning,” urging Nigerians not to allow these challenges to weaken their faith.
Archbishop Martins condemned the recent Palm Sunday attack in Jos, which claimed over 27 lives, describing it as both tragic and deeply disturbing given its timing on a sacred Christian day.
He criticised the government’s response to insecurity, stating that authorities have “consistently abdicated” their responsibility to protect lives and property.
The Archbishop further decried the continued killings across the country, insisting that no political agenda should take precedence over human lives.
He warned that failure by leaders to address insecurity and economic hardship could warrant resignation by those unable to deliver.
On the economic front, he pointed to the soaring cost of petroleum products as evidence of misplaced national priorities, noting the contradiction of high fuel prices in a major oil-producing nation.
Looking ahead to future elections, Martins urged Nigerians to become more actively involved in choosing credible leaders, emphasising integrity, sincerity, and the fear of God as essential qualities.
He concluded with a call for unity, peace, and resilience, encouraging citizens not to allow Nigeria’s diversity to be exploited for division, but instead to become agents of reconciliation in their communities.
