Low Turnout Threatens Local Governance As CDD Urges FCT Residents To Vote

When citizens stay away from the polls, accountability quietly slips away.

With the 21 February 2026 Area Council elections around the corner, the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD-West Africa) has raised the alarm over persistent voter apathy across residential estates and urban communities in Abuja.

In a statement released on Wednesday, CDD warned that low turnout weakens inclusive governance and allows poor service delivery, weak infrastructure and unresponsive leadership to thrive.

The organisation stressed that elections are not mere political rituals but a chance for residents to shape decisions that affect daily life, from waste management and public safety to transport, jobs and urban planning.

CDD noted that when citizens disengage, they surrender their power to demand security, quality education and healthcare, clean water, sanitation and electricity.

The group urged FCT residents, civil servants, estate dwellers, entrepreneurs, students and families, to see the Area Council polls as a critical democratic moment with real consequences for community development and resource allocation.

“As the capital city, Abuja must lead by example,” the organisation said, calling on residents to treat the election as a civic duty and an opportunity to demand transparent, inclusive and responsive governance.

The statement, signed by CDD-West Africa Director Dauda Garuba and Election Analysis Centre Chair Professor Victor Adetula, also appealed to community leaders, traditional rulers, the media, civil society groups and INEC to intensify voter education and mobilisation across the FCT.

CDD concluded that the strength of democracy lies not only in institutions but in participation, urging residents to turn apathy into action and show up at the polls.
