ECOMOG Legacy Honoured: Sierra Leone Decorates Nigeria’s Defence Chief With Top National Award

Long after the guns fell silent in Sierra Leone’s brutal civil war, the echoes of regional solidarity still resonate, and this week, that history was honoured on parade ground.

President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone has decorated Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, with the prestigious Grand Commander of the Order of the Rokel during the 17th Armed Forces Day celebration of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces.

The award recognises General Oluyede’s contribution to peace and stability in Sierra Leone during his deployment under the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG), as well as the sacrifices of Nigerian officers and soldiers who played frontline roles in ending the country’s civil war.

Reading the citation, officials noted that Oluyede served in Sierra Leone as a Platoon Commander at the residence of the then Head of State between 1992 and 1994, where he distinguished himself through exemplary leadership, discipline and unwavering commitment to the protection of government and civilians.

Beyond Nigeria’s Defence Chief, the ceremony also honoured key military figures from partner nations that supported Sierra Leone’s peace efforts.

Those decorated included former Nigerian Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Martin Luther Agwai (rtd); Lt. Gen. Daniel Opande (rtd) of Kenya; Lt. Gen. Ibrahima Sory Bangoura of Guinea; Maj. Gen. Paul Rogers of the United States; and Brig. Gen. Edward Butler (rtd) of the United Kingdom.

In a solemn moment, tributes were paid to the courage and sacrifices of the Nigerian Armed Forces, whose ECOMOG contingent was praised for standing at the forefront of regional peace enforcement during Sierra Leone’s civil war.

The Nigerian troops were commended for their bravery, resilience and protection of civilians at the height of the conflict.

The honours, observers say, reaffirm West Africa’s enduring appreciation of Nigeria’s stabilising role in regional security operations and the lasting legacy of ECOMOG’s intervention.
