ECOWAS Takes Message To The Grassroots In Sierra Leone, Reaching Schools, Communities Across Four Districts
Regional integration only becomes real when it reaches classrooms and market squares, not just conference halls.
That was the spirit behind ECOWAS’ district sensitisation tour across Sierra Leone, which took its 50th anniversary celebrations beyond the capital and into everyday communities.
From 2-5 February 2026, ECOWAS, working with the Sierra Leonean government, engaged students and community stakeholders across Kambia, Koinadugu, Tonkolili and Kono districts, using a two-track approach of school sensitisation sessions and district-level town hall meetings.
The delegation was led by Sierra Leone’s Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Kenyeh Barlay, alongside the ECOWAS Resident Representative, Ambassador John Azumah.
In secondary schools, students were introduced to ECOWAS’ mandate, history and contributions to peace, education, youth empowerment and regional integration, with interactive sessions encouraging young people to see ECOWAS as a “community of people,” not a distant institution.
Beyond the classrooms, district meetings brought together traditional rulers, civil society groups, women and youth leaders, traders, persons with disabilities, security actors and the media to discuss ECOWAS’ role in peace and security, democratic governance, trade facilitation, food security and jobs, in line with the Vision 2050 agenda of “ECOWAS of the People, Peace and Prosperity for All.”
Officials from Sierra Leone’s National Early Warning and Response Mechanism also spoke on preventive diplomacy and community security, while the Ministry of Trade and Commerce clarified how regional trade instruments such as the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme can benefit local businesses.
Stakeholders across the four districts welcomed the outreach, describing it as a rare opportunity to directly engage regional policymakers and shape future ECOWAS programming at the grassroots level.
