Liberia Pushes For Regional Digital Reform As Telecoms Chief Meets ECOWAS Commission President

At a time when West Africa’s digital future depends on cooperation rather than competition, Liberia is taking a leading role in aligning national reforms with a shared regional vision.

During a visit to Abuja on Thursday, 29 January 2026, the Chairman of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority, Clarence Massaquoi, held high-level talks with the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray.

The meeting focused on ongoing reforms and the development of Liberia’s digital sector, as well as strategies to deepen regional cooperation in telecommunications.

Massaquoi outlined Liberia’s reform agenda and underscored the need for coordinated policies that can unlock growth across West Africa’s fast-evolving digital economy.

He also briefed the ECOWAS Commission President on the ambitions of the West Africa Telecommunications Regulators’ Assembly, which aims to harmonise telecommunications policies across the sub-region by 2026.

The objective, he said, is to attract greater investment in digital infrastructure, reduce the cost of communication services, and accelerate regional digital transformation.

Both leaders exchanged views on the harmonisation of regulatory frameworks, the expansion of digital infrastructure, and the creation of a more integrated, inclusive and resilient regional telecommunications market, seen as critical to economic competitiveness and social inclusion across ECOWAS member states.
