Sustaining momentum in counter-insurgency operations often depends on the strength of support units behind the frontlines, and the Nigerian Army says it is doubling down on that resolve in the North East.

The Commander Corps of Engineers (CCE), Nigerian Army, Major General Shamsudeen Shafaru, has commended troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, for their resilience, professionalism and unwavering commitment in the ongoing fight against insurgency.

Major General Shafaru gave the commendation during a five-day operational assessment visit to the Theatre of Operation HADIN KAI, which commenced on Wednesday, 28 January 2026, and ended on Sunday, 1 February 2026.

During the visit, he toured the Headquarters Theatre Command, as well as various sectors, components, formations and units across the theatre.

Speaking at the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force (North East), the CCE said the visit was aimed at assessing and enhancing the operational capacity of Nigerian Army Engineers personnel deployed in the theatre.

He praised the Theatre Commander, Major Gene Abdulsalam Abubakar, and troops of Operation HADIN KAI for their dedication, courage and selfless service despite the harsh terrain and psychological demands of asymmetric warfare.

He also highlighted the critical role played by Nigerian Army Engineers in the operational successes recorded by the theatre.

Major General Shafaru explained that the visit was inspired by the Chief of Army Staff’s command philosophy to transform the Nigerian Army into a more professional, adaptable, combat-ready and resilient force capable of operating effectively within a joint and multi-agency environment.

He noted that Operation HADIN KAI was among the first theatres he chose to visit upon assumption of office, underscoring its strategic importance.

The CCE assured troops of sustained focus on training and capacity development, while pledging the provision of modern engineering platforms and equipment to boost operational effectiveness and support efforts to rid the North East of terrorism.

In his remarks, the Theatre Commander, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, described the visit as timely and strategic, given evolving security threats.

He emphasised the indispensable role of Nigerian Army Engineers in countering these threats and assured the CCE of the safety and welfare of engineer personnel deployed in the theatre, while appealing for continued support through additional operational enablers.

The visit featured detailed operational briefings, exchange of souvenirs, signing of the visitors’ book, group photographs and a guided tour of selected sectors and formations within the theatre.
