German Embassy, NAWOJ To Train 200 Women Journalists Ahead of 2026 International Women’s Day
At a time when women journalists are increasingly expected to lead conversations on accountability, climate action and democratic governance, a new partnership is set to strengthen their voices and professional influence in Nigeria.
The German Embassy in Nigeria and the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) FCT Chapter have announced a collaboration to train 200 women journalists in capacity building, leadership, investigative reporting and climate change communication.
The training is part of activities lined up to commemorate the 2026 International Women’s Day.
The partnership was sealed during a courtesy visit by the NAWOJ FCT Chairperson, Comrade Bassey Ita-Ikpang, alongside members of the association, to the German Ambassador in Abuja.
Speaking during the visit, Ikpang said the engagement was aimed at securing support for training in key areas including investigative journalism, gender equality, democratic governance and climate change, noting that such capacity building would strengthen women journalists to perform effectively in challenging media environments.
She emphasised that empowering women through training and leadership opportunities has far-reaching impact. “When you train a woman, you also train a community,” she said.
Responding, Mr Felix Haala, Head of Press and Political Counsellor at the German Embassy, assured NAWOJ of the embassy’s commitment to supporting the initiative with tools, expertise and external resource persons.
He disclosed that the embassy would provide an external expert to lead leadership sessions and help develop ideas to strengthen NAWOJ’s programmes.
“I am happy to be part of this initiative and the outlined programmes, and I will be available to engage with the women directly,” Haala said.
The embassy also expressed readiness to support NAWOJ FCT in additional activities to mark the 2026 International Women’s Day, reinforcing a shared commitment to advancing women’s leadership and professional growth in Nigeria’s media space.
