Makoko Youth Leader Freed After 4 Days In Police Detention As Rights Groups Force Police Retreat

In communities where development often comes at the cost of the poor, the release of one detained voice has become a reminder that collective pressure can still bend the arc of justice.

A youth leader from Makoko, Oluwatobi Aide, regained his freedom at about 7pm on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, after spending four days in what activists described as an illegal detention by the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Nigerian Police Force.

Aide was arrested on Sunday for participating in a peaceful protest against the alleged illegal demolition of homes in Makoko, reportedly carried out by the Lagos State Government in favour of property developers and the elite.

He was initially slated for arraignment at the Mobile Court in Oshodi on charges of conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.

However, the arraignment was abruptly aborted after the intervention of renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, who reportedly warned police authorities against further violations of Aide’s fundamental rights.

Following the intervention, police withdrew from the court proceedings and returned Aide to the RRS office in Alausa.

He was later granted administrative bail, although the process was delayed by what supporters described as excessive bail conditions, including a demand for a guarantor who must be a civil servant on Grade Level 14. After hours of negotiations, the police accepted Moshood Oshunfurewa, a member of the Democratic Socialist Movement (DSM) and union leader, alongside Onabule Mayowa, also a member of the DSM, as sureties.

Activists and civil society organisations hailed Aide’s release as a victory for solidarity and civic action, praising the roles played by legal practitioners from Inibehe Effiong Chambers, advocacy groups, and individuals who sustained pressure through legal and media channels.

The incident has reignited conversations around forced evictions, policing of protests, and the shrinking civic space for vulnerable communities in Lagos.
