Army Empowers Barracks Women With 20 Motorcycles In Sokoto
In a move that underscores the growing focus on economic inclusion within Nigeria’s military communities, the Nigerian Army has taken a practical step to strengthen the livelihoods of women in Giginya Cantonment, Sokoto.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division and Commander Sector 2 Joint Task Force (North West), Operation FANSAN YAMMA, has donated 20 brand new motorcycles to women in the cantonment to boost their income-generating activities and promote self-reliance.
The motorcycles were formally handed over to the Cantonment Magajiya at the NAOWA Leisure Park, where the GOC described the initiative as part of his Barracks Women Empowerment Scheme and a reflection of the Army’s commitment to the welfare of its personnel and their families.
He explained that the motorcycles would enhance mobility for women engaged in petty trading, helping them access markets, manage logistics and expand their businesses within and beyond the barracks.
According to him, the initiative aligns with the Chief of Army Staff’s directive to improve the morale and wellbeing of troops and their dependants through meaningful empowerment programmes.
He also commended women leaders in the cantonment for their support to serving personnel and their role in sustaining peace and harmony within the barracks.
Receiving the motorcycles on behalf of the beneficiaries, the Magajiya of Giginya Cantonment, Hajiya Amina Adamu, expressed deep appreciation for the gesture, describing it as transformative.
She assured that the motorcycles would be fairly distributed and properly maintained.
The event drew formation commanders, senior officers, the Chairperson of the 8 Division Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), members of the Nigerian Army Soldiers’ Wives Association (NASWA), and families of personnel.
The ceremony ended with a symbolic presentation of keys, souvenirs and group photographs.
