Anambra Police Free 35 Kidnap Victims As Crime Drops Sharply In 2025 – CP Orutugu
By Sunny A. David, Awka
In a year marked by tighter security and smarter policing, Anambra State is beginning to breathe easier.
The Anambra State Police Command says violent crimes, including kidnapping, armed robbery and cult-related activities, recorded a significant decline in 2025, with no fewer than 35 kidnap victims rescued across the state.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, disclosed this while briefing journalists at the Command Headquarters in Awka, attributing the gains to intelligence-driven operations, faster response time, enhanced patrols and stronger community partnerships.
Despite economic pressures and evolving criminal tactics, CP Orutugu said the Command dismantled several kidnapping syndicates, destroyed criminal hideouts and strengthened community policing structures.
These efforts, he noted, ensured the peaceful conduct of major events, including the President’s official visit, elections, and the gradual return of normal social life in Ihiala.
According to him, joint operations involving the Police, DSS, Armed Forces, NSCDC, Immigration Service, Agunaechemba and other agencies led to the arrest of over 300 suspects, recovery of more than 2,000 arms and ammunition, including explosives, and retrieval of over 60 stolen vehicles and motorcycles.
Several cases have already resulted in convictions.
The Police Commissioner also confirmed the re-arrest of suspects linked to the killing of late Hon. Justice Azuka in Onitsha, as well as those responsible for the murder of three Cameroonian nationals.
Ahead of the festive season, CP Orutugu announced heightened security across the state, warning that the use of knock-out substances and other social explosives remains prohibited.
He urged residents to stay vigilant, obey traffic rules, secure their homes and use only designated motor parks.
He commended the Anambra State Government, security agencies, traditional and religious leaders, the media and Ndi Anambra for their support, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to a safer state.
