Nigeria, US Seal Landmark Health Pact To Boost Primary Care, Strengthen Health Security

Nigeria has taken a decisive step towards building a stronger, more self-reliant health system with the signing of a landmark health cooperation agreement with the United States, signalling a shift from aid dependency to sustainable domestic investment.

The Federal Government of Nigeria and the United States Government, signed a technical Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Abuja aimed at strengthening health security, expanding access to quality primary healthcare, and improving the country’s capacity to prevent and respond to infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis.

Under the agreement, both countries will deepen collaboration in disease surveillance, outbreak response, laboratory systems, biosafety, data management, access to essential health commodities, and support for frontline health workers.

The partnership will also provide strategic technical assistance across Nigeria’s health sector.

The MoU aligns with Nigeria’s health sector reforms and self-reliance agenda. While the United States is expected to provide nearly US$2 billion in grant funding between 2026 and 2030, Nigeria has committed to allocating at least six per cent of executed federal and state budgets to health, a move projected to mobilise almost US$3 billion in domestic financing over the same period.

Speaking on the agreement, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, stated that it reflects Nigeria’s determination to build a resilient health system capable of preventing, detecting, and responding to health threats while expanding affordable and quality care for all citizens.
