A long-awaited global consensus on chronic illnesses has finally taken shape, signalling renewed urgency in the fight against diseases that account for the majority of deaths worldwide.

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a new Political Declaration on noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and mental health, marking a major step forward in global efforts to curb rising cases of cancers, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and mental health conditions.

The declaration introduces fresh, action-driven targets aimed at accelerating prevention, improving care and boosting investment.

Welcoming the development, the NCD Alliance described the adoption as a significant milestone for the global NCD agenda.

Its Policy and Advocacy Director, Alison Cox, said the move sends “a clear signal that countries are ready to scale up action on NCDs and mental health,” stressing that swift and sustained implementation must now follow.

While expressing regret that procedural objections by a few member states delayed the process, the Alliance emphasised that the focus must now shift from commitments to concrete action.

A statement signed by NCD Alliance’s Media Relations Specialist, Michael Kessler, urged governments and partners to sustain momentum and translate global promises into real improvements for millions of people living with NCDs and mental health conditions worldwide.
