Nigerian Teen Breaks Global Barrier With Ground-Breaking Science Feat

At a time when Nigeria is pushing to spotlight young talent on the world stage, a 16-year-old has just done what no Nigerian has achieved in the 11-year history of one of the world’s biggest science competitions, and he’s now just one step away from global glory.

Daniel Adeluyi, a bright and multi-talented student from Abuja, has advanced to the semi-finals of the 2025 Breakthrough Junior Challenge, emerging from thousands of entries worldwide to become one of only 30 semi-finalists, and the first Nigerian ever to reach this stage.

His entry, a crisp, two-minute video simplifying the mystery of wormholes, impressed judges for its clarity, creativity and scientific accuracy.

For Daniel, wormholes symbolise the power of curiosity and the possibility of reaching the “seemingly unreachable.”

If he wins, Daniel stands to receive a $250,000 university scholarship, while his teacher will take home $50,000, and his school will receive a $100,000 ultra-modern science lab.

Daniel, a former Assistant Head Boy at Brickhall School Abuja and founder of BRAINS, a youth-led initiative promoting early exposure to AI, is celebrated for his passion for science, storytelling and leadership.

From sports to music to documentary learning, he blends creativity with discipline, skills that shaped his winning video.

Now, he needs public support to secure a spot in the finals. The contestant with the highest combined engagement on Facebook and YouTube automatically qualifies.

“I would be very grateful if people would watch and like my video on both platforms,” Daniel appeals.
