Nigeria’s Hunger Crisis Deepens As 27.2 Million Face Severe Food Insecurity – Report
Nigeria is on the brink of a worsening hunger crisis, with 27.2 million people across 27 states and the Federal Capital Territory currently facing severe food insecurity, a figure projected to soar to 34.7 million by mid-2026 if urgent action is not taken.
The alarming forecast comes from the latest October 2025 Cadre Harmonisé food security analysis, which paints a grim picture of growing hardship driven by multiple crises, including insecurity, climate shocks, displacement, and erratic weather patterns.
According to the report, persistent insurgency, kidnapping, and banditry continue to disrupt farming and food supply chains, while prolonged dry spells and flooding have devastated farmlands and livelihoods.
Displacement caused by both conflict and natural disasters has further compounded the humanitarian situation, leaving millions without stable access to food.
Experts warn that without immediate and coordinated intervention, the nation could face a sharp increase in acute food and nutrition insecurity, particularly among vulnerable groups such as women and children.
The Federal Government and international partners are being urged to intensify joint efforts, expand agricultural support, and strengthen humanitarian responses to prevent a full-blown food emergency.
