Anambra Polls: New INEC Chairman Vows Credible, Transparent Elections
As preparations heighten for the Anambra Governorship Election scheduled for November 8, 2025, the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), has pledged to deliver free, fair, and credible elections that truly reflect the will of the Nigerian people.
Speaking at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja shortly after assuming office on Thursday, Professor Amupitan said his administration would uphold the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and discipline in all INEC operations.
He noted that the Anambra poll offers a defining opportunity for the Commission to reaffirm its commitment to credible elections and rebuild public trust in the electoral process.
“The eyes of the nation are upon us,” he said. “Our preparations, no matter how good, will only succeed through teamwork, synergy, and the cooperation of all stakeholders, including politicians and the general public.
Every voter must feel confident that their vote will count.”
He assured staff of improved welfare and conducive working conditions, stressing that their dedication and professionalism remain vital to achieving INEC’s constitutional mandate.
“We must work together, leveraging our skills and expertise to deliver on our collective responsibility,” he added.
Earlier, the Acting Chairman, Mrs May Agbamuche-Mbu, while handing over to Professor Amupitan, commended the Commission’s progress under the former Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, particularly in the deployment of technology-driven reforms, such as BVAS and IReV.
She described the new Chairman’s appointment as “a call to national service of the highest order,” expressing confidence in his ability to consolidate on the gains recorded so far.
“With the Anambra election just weeks away, the task ahead is enormous,” she noted. “But INEC staff have proven their resilience and patriotism, and will stand firmly with you as you lead the Commission into its next chapter.”
