Sultan Of Sokoto Calls For Social Media Regulation To Safeguard National Unity
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has expressed concern over the growing misuse of social media in Nigeria, warning that its unregulated use poses a serious threat to peace, unity, and mutual respect across the country.
Speaking with characteristic frankness, the revered traditional ruler said that while social media remains a powerful tool for communication and enlightenment, its abuse, particularly by some scholars and public figures, has fuelled misinformation, hate speech, and division among Nigerians.
He emphasised the need for responsible use of online platforms and urged authorities to introduce effective regulations that would preserve freedom of expression while curbing harmful content.
According to the Sultan, the moral and social fabric of the nation is at risk if individuals continue to exploit digital spaces to spread falsehoods and incite tension.
He called on religious and community leaders to lead by example and promote harmony in both their online and offline engagements.
