FG Launches Africa’s Largest Health Campaign, Targets 100 Million Nigerian Children

In what has been described as a landmark moment for public health in Africa, the Federal Government of Nigeria has launched the continent’s largest integrated health campaign, an ambitious initiative to reach over 100 million Nigerian children with life-saving vaccines and treatments.

The campaign flagged off in Abuja by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, combines interventions for measles, rubella, polio, HPV, malaria, routine immunisations, and neglected tropical diseases into one unified drive.

The programme, coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare through the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises health as a cornerstone of national development.

Speaking at the event, Senator Tinubu reaffirmed her commitment to advancing women’s and children’s health, calling on Nigerians to rally behind the campaign.

“A vaccine in a vial does not save a child — only when it enters a child’s arm does protection become real,” she said, urging parents to ensure full immunisation.

Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, described the initiative as “a historic moment for Nigeria’s health system” and one of the largest coordinated public health efforts ever undertaken in Africa.

“This is not just a vaccination campaign. It is about reimagining how we deliver health services, ensuring that no one, no community, and no child is left behind,” he said.

The Minister highlighted major strides under the Tinubu administration, including an increase in primary health care utilisation from 10 million visits per quarter in 2023 to 47 million in the second quarter of 2025.

The Executive Director of NPHCDA, Dr. Muyi Aina, described the initiative as “the mother of all health campaigns,” adding that it will close immunity gaps and strengthen community resilience.

The rollout will occur in two phases, beginning immediately in the 19 northern states, the FCT, and Oyo State, before extending to the southern states early next year.

Supported by UNICEF, WHO, Gavi, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the campaign marks a major step toward achieving “Health for All Nigerians” a shared national vision that transcends politics, region, and class.
