Respect The Naira, Stop Spraying Or Mutilating It — CBN Warns

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Olayemi Cardoso, has warned Nigerians to desist from abusing the Naira through spraying, hawking, or mutilation, describing such acts as disrespect for the nation’s sovereignty.

Speaking at the CBN Fair in Kaduna on Thursday, Cardoso, represented by the Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Mrs Hakama Sidi Ali, urged the public to keep the Naira clean and rely only on verified information from the apex bank.

The fair, themed “Driving Alternative Payment Channels as Tools for Financial Inclusion, Growth and Accelerated Economic Development,” was organised to sensitise Nigerians on policies that drive inclusion, strengthen small businesses, and stabilise the economy.

Cardoso highlighted recent reforms, including the unification of exchange rates, clearance of over $7bn FX backlog, bank recapitalisation, the Non-Resident BVN scheme, and the Nigeria Payments System Vision 2028, aimed at deepening digital transformation.

He added that new initiatives such as the Unified Complaints Tracking System and *959# USSD code were introduced to boost transparency and consumer confidence in the financial sector.
