FG, Gombe Government Sign MoU To Convert General Hospital Kumo Into Federal Medical Centre
The Federal Government and Gombe State have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to convert General Hospital Kumo into Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Kumo, to expand access to advanced healthcare in the North-East.
The agreement, signed in Abuja, was presided over by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako, and Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.
Dr Salako described the move as part of President Bola Tinubu’s drive to ensure equitable healthcare nationwide, noting that FMC Kumo becomes the 16th federal tertiary institution established by the current administration in two years.
He added that the partnership would fast-track staffing, strengthen health insurance coverage, and support specialised care, including plans for a snakebite treatment and research centre in Gombe.
Governor Yahaya hailed the development as “the icing on the cake,” citing the state’s contributory health insurance scheme which already has over 345,000 enrollees.
He said the new FMC would serve not just Gombe residents but also neighbouring states.
Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health, Daju Kachollom, described the agreement as a “historic moment,” stressing that it reflects the Renewed Hope Agenda’s focus on decentralisation, sustainability and results-driven healthcare delivery.
