ECOWAS Parliament Steps Up Fight Against Drug Abuse In Liberia

Drug abuse is tightening its grip on communities across West Africa eroding public health, fuelling insecurity, and threatening economic progress.

This week, the ECOWAS Parliament took its awareness campaign to Monrovia, Liberia, determined to push back against the crisis.

From 4 to 8 August 2025, a delegation of parliamentarians met with government ministries, civil society groups, health professionals, and youth associations to address the twin challenges of drug abuse and mental health.

They also visited Monrovia neighbourhoods where addiction rates are alarmingly high.

The mission stressed that tackling the problem requires more than law enforcement it calls for prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and stronger social systems.

Delegates urged Liberian authorities to create more jobs for young people, expand educational opportunities, and improve healthcare access.

This visit follows similar missions in Guinea and Sierra Leone earlier this year. Through these engagements, ECOWAS aims to develop concrete policy recommendations to help member states craft effective, coordinated strategies against drug abuse.
