Lassa Fever Cases Rise: NCDC Urges Vigilance As Death Toll Hits 155

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has raised concern over the rising toll of Lassa fever in the country, with 11 new confirmed cases reported across Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi States in Week 29 of 2025 (14th–20th July).

According to the latest situation report, Nigeria has recorded a total of 822 confirmed cases and 155 deaths so far this year, marking a troubling Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 18.9% an increase from the 17.1% recorded during the same period in 2024.

Alarmingly, 89% of all confirmed cases have been traced to just five states: Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, and Ebonyi, underscoring the need for targeted interventions and heightened awareness in these high-burden areas.

The NCDC has urged journalists, health workers, and the public to utilise the data in raising awareness and promoting preventive measures.
