EU Reaffirms Support For Nigeria In Tackling Human Trafficking
The European Union has restated its commitment to supporting Nigeria in building a sustainable and rights-based approach to migration governance.
Speaking at the 28th National Stakeholders’ Consultative Forum on Trafficking in Persons in Abuja, the EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Gautier Mignot, said the union remains fully invested in helping Nigeria strengthen its national response to human trafficking.
Themed “Human Trafficking is Organised Crime: End the Exploitation”, the summit was part of activities marking the 2025 International Day Against Human Trafficking, observed annually on 30 July.
Ambassador Mignot revealed that an additional €6 million has been mobilised to support ongoing interventions led by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and FIAPP.
The funds will bolster efforts to protect victims, bring perpetrators to justice, and promote safe, legal migration pathways.
“At the heart of this intervention is building resilience—both within institutions and in communities vulnerable to trafficking,” he said, emphasising the need for cooperation, rule of law, and data-driven strategies.
He stressed that all responses must remain grounded in human rights, gender sensitivity, and ethical practice, ensuring the inclusion of women, girls, and marginalised groups.
Also speaking, the National Security Adviser, Mr Nuhu Ribadu, represented by Hajia Lami Jibril, commended the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for its relentless efforts. He said collaboration among institutions is key and must always centre on protecting people.
The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Mohammed Marwa (rtd), represented by Mr Shedrack Haruna, highlighted the link between human trafficking and other criminal networks, including drug trafficking and money laundering.
“These traffickers, who trade in human lives, are often the same ones fuelling drug abuse and cross-border crime,” he warned, calling for a united front against these interlinked threats.
