Anambra Police Reopen Investigation Into Death Of Business Leader Okechukwu Akaneme
The Anambra State Police Command has pledged a full investigation into the tragic death of prominent businessman and former President of the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Mr Okechukwu Akaneme, following fresh public outcry over the circumstances surrounding his passing.
Mr Akaneme reportedly died on 10th July 2025, months after sustaining severe spinal injuries allegedly during an enforcement operation by the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA), said to have been accompanied by armed police officers, on 11th October 2024.
In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police expressed deep condolences to Mr Akaneme’s family and acknowledged the widespread concerns raised by the public.
Preliminary internal findings from last year had indicated that some actions taken during the enforcement exercise deviated from standard police procedures.
However, in light of Mr Akaneme’s death, the case has now been officially reopened, with the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, directed to conduct a fresh and thorough probe.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reassured the public that any officer found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary or legal consequences. “No one is above the law,” the statement read. “We are committed to justice, accountability, and the protection of human rights.”
The Command also confirmed it is liaising with relevant state agencies to ensure transparency and cooperation in the investigation.
Mr Akaneme was widely respected in Anambra’s business community, and his death has sparked calls for answers and justice from civil society and residents across the state.
