INEC Urges Media To Register For 2025 Bye-Election Coverage As Deadline Nears

With just days to go before the deadline, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on media organisations across Nigeria to complete their accreditation for coverage of the upcoming bye-elections scheduled for Saturday, 16th August 2025.

Despite opening its online portal on 8th July, INEC revealed that, as of 3:00 pm on Wednesday, 23rd July, it had received only 12 applications covering 91 individuals a figure the Commission described as “far below expectations.”

The accreditation portal — https://imap.inecnigeria.org will remain open until midnight on Thursday, 31st July 2025. INEC made it clear that late applications will not be entertained under any circumstances.

In a statement signed by Mrs. Victoria Eta-Messi, Director of Voter Education and Publicity, INEC emphasised the importance of media participation in promoting electoral transparency and accountability.

“The media plays a vital role in strengthening democracy through timely, balanced, and professional election coverage. We urge all interested print, broadcast, and online outlets to seize this opportunity,” she said.

For further assistance, applicants can contact the Commission on 07088844564 or 08032861058.

As Nigeria prepares for another round of polls, INEC and the media have a shared responsibility to inform, enlighten, and uphold public trust in the democratic process.
